Oh Shenandoah Lyrics
Oh Shenandoah Song Lyrics
Oh, Shenandoah,
I long to see you,
Away you rolling river.
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to see you,
Away, I'm bound away,
'cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah,
I love your daughter,
Away, you rolling river.
For her I'd cross,
Your roaming waters,
Away, I'm bound away,
'Cross the wide Missouri.
'Tis seven years,
since last I've seen you,
And hear your rolling river.
'Tis seven years,
since last I've seen you,
Away, we're bound away,
Across the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to see you,
And hear your rolling river.
Oh Shenandoah,
I long to see you,
Away, we're bound away,
Across the wide Missouri.

This folk song has deep roots. ‘Oh, Shenandoah’ is a folklore music widely popular in sailors and workers of rivers. It has emerged in 1800ies and therefore has several sets of lyrics. On this site, you see one possible interpretation of them. The origin has probably originated when canoers and fur-traders were singing a shanty song going to Indians to make a trade. The song loosely tells the story of a man who fell in love with a daughter of a chief Shenandoah named Oneida Iroquois. A singer longs for her with all heart but has to go on long distances to make a trade for the living. He wants to marry her.
