Freight Train

David Grisman and Jerry Garcia Lyrics

Freight Train Lyrics

Freight Train Song Lyrics

Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
They won't know what route I'm going

When I'm dead and in my grave
No more good times here I crave
Place the stones at my head and feet
And tell them all I'm gone to sleep

When I die, oh bury me deep
Down at the end of old Chestnut Street
So I can hear old Number Nine
As she comes rolling by

When I die, oh bury me deep
Down at the end of old Chestnut Street
Place the stones at my head and feet
And tell them all I'm gone to sleep

Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
They won't know what route I'm going

It’s a folk song interspersed with love to trains. Particularly, David Grisman and Jerry Garcia do the light song in which they reveal their love to trains, particularly tying it with anticipation of death and the wreck of old Number Nine – one of the most famous old-days wrecking of the trains (more singers sang about it in their days). It is from the subgenre of wrecking trains (it’s a small culture about it in the West). The singers tell that when they die, please bury ‘em under the old chestnut tree, place stones on their heads & feet so they never raise up again & tell their pursuers they’re dead.
