About Future

Future: A Pioneer of Modern Hip Hop Music

Future, born Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn on November 20, 1983, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a key figure in the Atlanta hip hop scene, as well as one of the genre's most prolific and distinctive artists. Future, known for his mumble-style vocals and autotune crooning, has been a trap music powerhouse since his rise to prominence in the early 2010s.

Genres and years of activity

Future's music primarily includes trap, mumble rap, and hip-hop. He rose to prominence in 2003 as a member of the Dungeon Family collective, where he debuted with the group Big Boi. He is regarded as a pioneer in using Auto-Tune in rap music, and his distinct style has influenced countless others.

Albums and noteworthy compositions

Future has released numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums throughout his career. His debut album, Pluto (2012), produced the hit singles "Turn On the Lights" and "Neva End". The other singles were "Move That Dope" and "I Won". Future's subsequent album releases, DS2 (2015), Evol (2016), as well as two mixtapes, What a Time to Be Alive (2015, in collaboration with Drake), and Project E.T. New York, NY, marked his success. The song "Mask Off" from the Future album marked his first top-ten Billboard Hot 100 hit. Notable albums from his discography include The Wizrd (2019), and the mixtapes Dirty Sprite 2 (2015) and Monster High Off Life, which contains the diamond-certified single "Life Is Good". His full album I Never Liked You is due in 2022, and in addition to “Wait for U” featuring Drake and Tems, the album includes the Grammy-winning hit. Meanwhile, his collaborations: What a Time to Be Alive with Drake (2015) and Pluto x Baby Pluto with Lil Uzi Vert (2020)—became titans of the hip-hop landscape.

Lyric analysis and themes

As a traditional drug dealer, Future's music seldom shows a picture of the dark street - with some tracks being personal heartbreak hits. On "Mask Off," he raps, "Percocets, molly, Percocets / Chase a check, never chase a bitch" —accepting the rap lifestyle in all its murky glory. The flute melody on this track provides a dark backdrop for his harsh realities and makes a somber, reflective mood. On the opposite end, “Turn On The Lights” finds a more softened Future, searching for real love: “I'm lookin' for her, I'm lookin' for her, I'm lookin' for her”. This reiterative refrain with a yearning echo underscores his vulnerability and longing for more than a superficial relationship.

Influence and reception

Future's impact on hip hop is well known. Ever since his pioneering employment of Auto-Tune influenced a generation of artists and reshaped the sound of contemporary rap, fans and critics often commend him for his ability to evoke feelings with over-processed vocals, while others describe his aesthetic as too samey. He has taken home three Grammy awards and been nominated for countless others. His number-one single with Drake, "Way 2 Sexy", is a testament to his influence and success.
