Runnin’

Pharrell Lyrics

Pharrell Williams aka Pharrell (as he is represented on this site) is the hip-hop, R&B, and funk singer who is a proverbial and famous dude of 43 years old. He really doesn’t look like his age, he can play the 22-years-old child, who looks organically at the stage with the microphone. This hip-hop thing is a piece of the soundtrack to the motion picture ‘Hidden Figures,’ where he is a producer and a composer (performer and a songwriter). This is an upcoming film, which is to be released on December 25th. It tells about some aspects of fate and life of Katherine Johnson, the physicist, and mathematician, who was responsible for calculating the trajectories of the space rocket that flew to Mercury in 1969. A lover of many Jim Parsons will co-star in it. Mr. Pharrell is a very many-faceted person. In addition to the tours that any normal singer has, he is a producer of movies, songwriter, and a video maker. The big uplifting jump for him was the participation in ‘Despicable Me 2’ film, where he was a music maker and an advertising supporter. He has more than 190 songs as of now, including 5 officially confirmed in the upcoming albums. So many of them have become gold and platinum and so many singers and cameos he involved in his music during his life path that it is hard to count them all. At least, for that job, you shall require hours, not minutes. Kanye West, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Nelly Furtado, Scissor Sisters, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé Knowles, Alicia Keys, and many-many more were involved in music-making processes with Mr. Williams. In front of us is another piece of fine hip-hop lasting 3:36 by this performer and a songwriter. In the lyrics, he recalls, as he was a kid in the small funky town in Virginia. It was a hot summer and neighborhood kids ate ice cream to save themselves from this hellish oven. At the time, he already knew that standing still is not an option – to succeed, you must work on yourself, work hard every day and to be farther in your dreams than of where you now. This idea he back up in these lines: ‘If I stand still I cannot get far They want the Moon, I’m on Mars’ Later in the words, he even raises the issues of skin color and running from these offences, when some people think they are better than the others just because of the hue of the epidermis. Then he turns to the questions of genders in the following line: ‘In the law of the land (land) the women were often banned (banned)’ Saying this, he means that women were always treated like the second grade and there were banned from doing lots of men’s jobs. This film, the soundtrack to which this song is, also tells about the uneasy fate of an outstanding woman, who fought for her rights to prove the people around that she is capable of more than they think of her, her kind, and her skin. An uneasy film that must be watched at least for the sake of truth. Runnin’ Lyrics

Runnin’ by Pharrell

Summertime in Virginia was a oven
All the kids eating ice cream with their cousins
I was studyin’ while you was playing the dozens (dozens…)
Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t
Runnin’ from the man (man) runnin’ from the badge (badge)
Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t
Runnin’ toward our plans (plans) and the judges hands (hands)
Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t
I know they say you crawl for your own
But in my mind I already jog
If I stand still I cannot get far
They want the Moon, I’m on Mars
Sometime my mind dives deep
When I’m runnin’
I don’t want no free ride
I’m just sick and tired of runnin’
Some nights I cry
Cause I can see the day comin’
Together we fight
Oh, but no more runnin’
You and I are not different from each other
Shut our eyes, when we slumber I see numbers
Black and white, we’re computers, I am colored
Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t
From runnin’ to exams (exams) to jobs for a man (man)
Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t
In the law of the land (land) the women were often banned (banned)
Don’t act like you was there when you wasn’t
I know they say you crawl for your own
But in my mind I already jog
If I stand still I cannot get far
They want the Moon, I’m on Mars
Sometime my mind dives deep
When I’m runnin’
I don’t want no free ride
I’m just sick and tired of runnin’
Some nights I cry
Cause I can see the day comin’
Together we fight
Oh, but no more runnin’
I know they say you crawl for your own
But in my mind I already jog
If I stand still I cannot get far
They want the Moon, I’m on Mars
Sometime my mind dives deep
When I’m runnin’
I don’t want no free ride
I’m just sick and tired of runnin’
Some nights I cry
Cause I can see the day comin’
Together we fight
(Oh, but no more runnin’…)
