From a Standalone to a Sequel.

This project was originally envisioned as a standalone, but such was the box-office and critical success of the movie in 2019 that it has since spurred any number of conversations about a potential sequel among fans and the filmmakers. In the end, however, the opportunity to do a follow-up that could dig even more into Arthur Fleck's character started the ball rolling on Joker 2. Joaquin Phoenix returns as Arthur, with director Todd Phillips also back to the franchise and writing the film with Scott Silver.
This sequel to the realist predecessor, who takes a sudden about-turn, dives head-on into the musical territory and promises a wide concoction of drama and melody against the nuttiness of Gotham.

Cast and Production

By that, I mean Lady Gaga, who is now reported to be attached to the cast as Harley Quinn, and likely with it comes thematic expansion with the wild relationship dynamics being introduced to the storyline. The subline of the film reads "Folie à Deux," suggesting shared madness—the perfect theme for the tumultuous bond of Joker and Harley Quinn.
Among other actors of note who return to the cast are Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, while Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener are new to this ensemble in undisclosed roles.

Music and ambition.

And with 15 musical numbers listed in its entry, the film positions to all but tease a one-of-a-kind sonic experience that most certainly includes renditions of classic chart-topping hits. The possibility of original numbers being part of it is still up in the air, though listed alongside is "That's Entertainment!" from The Band Wagon.

Hildur Guðnadóttir—a genius Oscar-winning composer for "Joker"—is back on this project to contribute her sinister musical cues, blending this time with the elements of the narrative themes from the film.
Releasing on October 4, 2024, the sequel will revisit an iconic character but redefine him in bigger and bolder cinematic vision.
