This thing here is from these days when Cher was in the creative duo named ‘Sonny & Cher.’ Cher as a singer started her outstanding career in this duo as the back vocalist and later she was known as Cheryl LaPiere, Cher Bono, Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere, and Bono Allman. Bono Allman was, obviously, dedicated to her both spouses, with the last one she divorced in 1975, as they couldn’t withstand her extremely talented and strong personality.
The ex-husband of Cher, Sonny Bono, who gave her this family name, was a person of many deeds and talents. Having starting his career as a singer together with Cher, his second wife (out of 4 in the full list), he later acted as a songwriter, an actor in films and on television, and eventually became a politician, occupying a position of mayor and ended as the senator from the state of California. What is outstanding is that he, till now is the only member of the Senate who has the #1 song in the US Billboard.
Cher, in turn, did absolutely more remarkable and inspiring career, becoming much bigger than her ex-husband did. She is an actress, businesswoman, dancer, fashion designer, model, record producer, singer, author, comedian, director, film producer, philanthropist, songwriter & television host – wow, isn’t it? She is awarded by an extreme number of awards including Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Golden Globe, and Cannes Film Festival Award, which combination a little people have. She is remarkable with selling more than 0.1 billion copies of her songs worldwide and she made a great input in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the contribution to the fight for the rights of LGBT society. Whatever she did, she succeeded eventually, though she had some declines in popularity, as famous people usually have. In addition to the music, acting, and voicing, she showed herself on Broadway and we hope that soon she will receive a Tony or Obie. In a case of receiving Tony, she’ll enter the list of several exclusive people on the planet, who received all major awards in the world of showbiz.
Returning to a song, we say it was a cover on Don Harris & Dewey Terry’s creation of 1963. The cover by the duo was included in their studio album named ‘The Wondrous World of Sonny & Chér’ of 1966, which was sold in more than 5 million copies throughout the world. The sad story is related to the song – one of the several performers of this song in the history, Dale and Grace, should sing it in their concerto on the very same day as Kennedy was murdered – and the performer saw the motorcade & even waved to them some seconds before the assassination happened, from his hotel room.
The reason this song hasn’t been too popular in the performance of Sonny & Cher is maybe it was already well-known up to this date. Nevertheless, bright vocals of Cher made a big contribution to it, while Sonny’s rusty vocals only drowned it down, we think. Or maybe it was the immensely light meaning of the lyrics? We shall contribute our thought to the latter variant. You have to listen to a song to understand this point of view – there is a thought that some person (let’s name it person 1), exceptionally loves the another, a person 2, let’s suppose. But the person 2 somehow thinks that a person 1 has made something so wrong that now he or she wants to break apart with person 1. And the song is sung from the face of person 1, who indeed does not understand what has happened to person 2 and what did (s)he do so wrong. The only thing (s)he tells to person 2 that (s)he must adopt a decision now – would they be together with person 1 or shall they separate.
