I'll Make a Man Out of You

I'll Make a Man Out of You Lyrics

I'll Make a Man Out of You Song Lyrics

Let's get down to business
To defeat the Huns.
Did they send me daughters
When I asked for sons?

You're the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man
Out of you.

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within.
Once you find your center
You are sure to win.

You're a spineless, pale pathetic lot
And you haven't got a clue.
Somehow I'll make a man
Out of you.

Chien-po: I'm never gonna catch my breath
Yao: Say goodbye to those who knew me
Ling: Boy, was I a fool in school for cutting gym
Mushu: This guy's got them scared to death
Mulan: Hope he doesn't see right through me
Chien-po: Now I really wish that I knew how to swim

[men] BE A MAN
We must be swift as a coursing river
[men] BE A MAN
With all the force of a great typhoon
[men] BE A MAN
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us
'til the Huns arrive.
Heed my every order
And you might survive.

You're unsuited for the rage of war
So pack up, go home you're through
How could I make a man
Out of you?

[men] BE A MAN
We must be swift as a coursing river
[men] BE A MAN
With all the force of a great typhoon
[men] BE A MAN
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

[everyone] BE A MAN
We must be swift as a coursing river
BE A MAN
With all the force of a great typhoon
BE A MAN
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon
Hoo-ah!

The song "I'll Make a Man out of You," from Disney's "Mulan," is a vocally inspired song that largely sums up all from hard work, discipline to how Mulan and company get whipped into shape during the training period before entering battle with the Huns. The song is delivered in a solo from Li Shang, designed not only to be an anthemic piece for his soldiers but also to tell in the film's story the themes dealing with issues of identity, strength, and gender roles.

The song opens with Shang's determination to "defeat the Huns" as he vents frustration with the bumbling of his troops, whom he may be under the impression are not cut out for the harshness of warfare. He starts setting this stage of Mulan being the fish out of the water for her by pointing out what is expected from the societal gender role, more specifically from military valor, when this rhetorical question—"Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?

"I'll Make a Man Out of You" discusses in its lyrics the change that must be taken to be equipped for the requisites of war. It contrasts physical strength and agility to such qualities that are under the category of courage, determination, and search for the "center" of a human being. This means the fact that true power lies in the fact of being both physically able and internally strong. That is a message ringing quite familiar within Mulan's own odyssey of finding herself and empowerment.

The chorus, with references to the coursing river, great typhoon, raging fire, and the dark side of the moon, makes clear that those elements serve as powerful metaphors for qualities with which the soldiers must equip themselves. Each, in turn, represented the power, strength, resilience, and character, respectively, signifying true heroism of manifold nature.

In the factual crossing of the bridge by Chien-po, Yao, Ling, and Mulan, the device is the personal struggle and fears that they are undergoing. It hence develops their characters more and shines more light on the themes of the song: self-doubt and adversity. Mulan fears that if she is to go in front of the whole wide world, they would all see right through, meaning find her out. However, it also reflected a universal struggle: that of needing to prove oneself in the face of skepticism.

After all, "I'll Make a Man Out of You" was not just about the process of turning the under-prepared into warriors but a challenge and furthering of the concept of becoming a "man" or, in more universal terms, being a true hero. Set to an inspiring melody and rousing lyrics, it really hailed triumph at self-improvement and breaking societal boundaries—a quite memorable and impactful piece in the Disney musical canon.
